Winter Oats

Agrii's Winter Oat Varieties

We offer a wide range of Winter Oat varieties for all soil types and farming systems.

Oats are a white straw break crop and as such can be used as a common Take-all break.

They are adaptable and can tolerate soil pH down to 5.3. Current best practice is to not grow oats more than one year in four to reduce the potential incidence of oat mosaic virus and stem eelworm.

To obtain maximum value of the crop, growing on a milling contract is crucial.  Please talk with your local Agrii or Viterra UK Ltd representative about availability of milling oat contracts.

Mascani

Still the market leading variety driven by end-users. Decent standing ability and acceptable maturity with a disease resistance package slightly better than others on the list.

Good specific weight, best kernel content and best performance in the mill, shows why it’s the preferred oat. With this need in the market, good value contracts will be available.

Cromwell

Currently yielding near the top of the list with the best specific weight and average screenings. Short straw and stiff but watch out for mildew.

Milling potential seems good with kernel content only marginally behind Mascani and early tests showing promise.

Dalguise

Dalguise yields in the middle of the pack and has good specific weight with decent kernel content. It is also early maturing, but straw and disease will need looking after.

Gerald’s yields are a bit behind the rest now. With moderate grain characteristics, later maturity and susceptibility to mildew this should only be grown where success has been had before.

Grafton

Grafton is a popular older naked oat variety.

It is early maturing with good specific weight and low screenings. A PGR programme is required as it is tall with moderate straw strength.

Grafton is susceptible to mildew and average for crown rust, which can be effectively managed with a decent agronomic package

Fusion

Breeder: Institute of Biological, Environmental and Rural Sciences

Fusion has proved to be a high yielding semi-dwarf variety.

A PGR programme is not required due to its short stiff straw, and it is a good variety choice for areas where lodging is a high risk.

Fusion is susceptible to both mildew and crown rust; a robust fungicide programme is recommended.

Peleton

Peloton is a newer variety in the naked oat market and sits as the highest yielding of winter varieties. It has a good specific weight and low screenings. Peloton has moderate height and is stiff-strawed, maturity is marginally later than Grafton.

With good resistance to mildew and crown rust it is a relatively easy variety to manage.

Benefits of Winter Naked Oats

Naked oats have the same agronomic benefits as husked oats. However, naked oats naturally thresh free from the husk during harvest, producing a nutrient dense natural groat with high digestible energy.

In comparison to spring naked oats, an established winter crop is more tolerant of spring droughts and has the potential to produce greater yields.

Our naked oats are grown on an exclusive buy-back contract and marketed through our Superioats brand with GB Seeds.
