Using Liquid Gypsum in UK Agriculture

Gypsum is a source of calcium and sulphur that can have a role in soil and crop management where there is a defined agronomic requirement.

Liquid gypsum products provide these nutrients in a formulation designed for liquid application, offering a different application route to conventional granular or powdered gypsum.

Whether gypsum is appropriate depends on the soil, crop, existing nutrient status and the reason for application. It should therefore be used in response to a defined need rather than as a general treatment for soil structure.

 

What is liquid gypsum?

Gypsum is calcium sulphate, supplying both calcium and sulphur.

Traditional agricultural gypsum is normally applied as a solid material, while liquid products contain calcium and sulphur in a formulation suitable for application through spraying equipment.

The formulation, nutrient concentration and recommended application rate vary between products, so individual product guidance should always be followed.

 

What role can gypsum play in soil management?

Calcium has an important role in soil chemistry and plant nutrition, while sulphur is an essential crop nutrient involved in processes including protein formation.

In some soil situations, calcium can also influence the way clay particles interact. Where soil chemistry is limiting aggregation, appropriate calcium inputs may help support a more stable soil structure.

However, poor soil structure can have many causes, including trafficking, cultivation, drainage, organic matter, soil texture and wet working conditions. Gypsum will not correct physical compaction or poor drainage where these are the underlying problems.

 

Gypsum and clay soils

Gypsum is sometimes associated with improving clay soil structure, but the response is not the same across all clay soils.

Its greatest value is likely to be where soil chemistry indicates that additional calcium or the management of excess sodium could be beneficial.

On soils where calcium levels are already adequate and sodium is not a problem, applying gypsum purely to improve structure may offer limited benefit.

Soil analysis and an understanding of the underlying structural problem should therefore come before product selection.

 

Calcium, sodium and soil structure

High levels of exchangeable sodium can cause clay particles to disperse, contributing to poor aggregate stability, restricted infiltration and surface crusting.

Calcium supplied through gypsum can, in suitable situations, help replace sodium on soil exchange sites. The displaced sodium can then move through the soil profile where drainage allows.

This is why gypsum has a recognised role in the management of sodic soils, although the requirement and rate need to be determined from soil analysis.

 

Calcium and sulphur for crop nutrition

Gypsum should also be considered as a nutrient source.

Calcium contributes to plant cell structure and development, while sulphur is particularly important for protein synthesis and efficient nitrogen use.

The nutritional value of a gypsum application will depend on the crop requirement, existing soil supply and the amount of calcium and sulphur delivered by the product.

It should therefore be considered within the wider crop nutrition programme rather than in isolation.

 

Liquid gypsum compared with conventional gypsum

The main difference between liquid and conventional gypsum is the formulation and application method.

Liquid products can be applied using suitable spraying equipment, while conventional gypsum is normally spread as a solid material.

Claims around speed of availability or response should be considered on a product-by-product basis. The concentration of calcium and sulphur applied, soil conditions and intended agronomic purpose are more important than the physical form alone.

 

When might liquid gypsum be considered?

Depending on the product and soil situation, liquid gypsum may be considered where:

  • soil analysis identifies a need for additional calcium;
  • sulphur is required within the crop nutrition programme;
  • soil chemistry indicates that excess sodium is contributing to structural problems;
  • a liquid application route is appropriate for the farming system; or
  • the product has a defined role within a wider soil-management programme.

The reason for application should be clear before deciding on product, timing or rate.

 

Application rate and timing

There is no single application rate that is appropriate for every liquid gypsum product or soil.

Rates vary according to product concentration, soil characteristics, crop requirement and the objective of the treatment.

Application timing should also reflect the intended use and product recommendation rather than simply the time of year.

Tank mixing and compatibility

Compatibility should not be assumed when combining liquid gypsum with other crop nutrition, biostimulant or crop protection products.

Calcium-containing products can interact with some formulations and nutrients, so product-specific compatibility guidance should be checked before tank mixing.

Where compatibility is uncertain, seek technical advice and use an appropriate compatibility test before preparing a full spray tank.

 

Is liquid gypsum right for your soil?

Symptoms such as poor infiltration, surface crusting, restricted rooting or waterlogging can indicate a soil problem, but they do not identify the cause.

Physical compaction, drainage, soil texture, nutrient balance and soil chemistry can produce similar symptoms and may require very different management approaches.

Soil assessment should therefore come before treatment.

Where calcium, sulphur or sodium management is identified as a limitation, gypsum may form part of the solution. Where the underlying problem is physical compaction, drainage or another structural issue, other management changes may be more appropriate.

 

A targeted approach to soil management

Liquid gypsum can provide a useful source of calcium and sulphur and may have a role in particular soil-management situations.

Its value depends on matching the product to a defined agronomic need rather than treating it as a universal solution for clay, compacted or poorly drained soils.

Combining soil analysis, field assessment and agronomic advice can help determine whether gypsum is appropriate and how it should fit alongside nutrition, cultivation and wider soil-management decisions.
