Plant Protection Products (PPPs) help you control weeds, pests and diseases, and improve yields – but their availability and efficacy are declining.
Helping you reduce reliance on products
At the same time, we recognise that you need to reduce your reliance on these products, to control production costs and limit your impact on the environment. After all, synthetic crop protection products should, we believe, never be the first port of call in agronomy.
Taking a more balanced approach to using PPPs is where an integrated whole-farm approach comes in.
Five Point Plan: Integrated Whole Farm Solutions
What a whole-farm approach means
Integrated Farm Management (IFM) is at the core of our Green Horizons work: Its aim is to deliver a more sustainable and profitable farming system, by taking a whole-farm approach that combines modern technology with traditional methods.
This includes appropriate and efficient use of inputs, smarter approaches to business planning, and the use of innovations and new technologies.
Integrated Crop Management (ICM) is part of this whole-farm approach, and takes a more integrated, holistic approach to the life cycle of crops.
Working alongside these two approaches, is Integrated Pest Management (IPM), which seeks to reduce reliance on synthetic PPPs to what is economically and ecologically justified. For example, making decisions on seed rates, drilling dates, nutrition, and varieties, can all help reduce pest, weed, and disease pressure.
What we’re doing
To support you with an integrated whole-farm approach, we are:
- Fast-tracking trials of more than 130 biostimulants, elicitors, endophytes and biopesticides with our sister company Fortgreen
- Increasing the proportion of our trials that include Integrated Pest Management to 100%
- Working with other stakeholders to establish a metric for the patterns and risks of crop protection products
- Advising on the use of more resilient genetics as part of our Variety Sustainability Ratings, with an increase in proportion of these sold
- Developing alternative climate-tolerant break crops for OSR, and associated advice
- Encouraging the widespread adoption of Integrated Pest Management through events, networking groups and advice
- Developing digital tools to help you identify risks and use chemical products in a more targets way
