Biosolutions in UK Crop Production

Biosolutions in UK Crop Production

Biosolutions are a broad group of technologies that use biological materials, natural extracts or biologically derived processes to support crop performance.

They can include biostimulants, microbial products, plant defence elicitors, biological crop protection and other technologies used to support crop health, nutrient use and resilience.

Agrii evaluates biosolutions through research, Glasshouse work and field trials to understand where they provide a repeatable response and how they fit alongside conventional crop protection, nutrition and agronomy.

Where biosolutions fit

Biosolutions can add another layer to crop management where there is a clearly defined agronomic need.

Depending on the technology, this may include supporting establishment and rooting, improving nutrient-use efficiency, helping crops tolerate environmental stress or influencing natural plant defence mechanisms.

Some biological products also have a role within integrated pest and disease management.

Evidence-led product selection

Biosolutions should not be treated as interchangeable.

Their value depends on the mode of action, crop, timing and conditions in which they are used. A product designed to support rooting, for example, will have a different role from one intended to prime plant defence or influence nutrient use.

This is why Agrii assesses individual technologies before determining where they may have a practical role on farm.

How Agrii evaluates biosolutions

The biosolutions market includes a wide range of products and claims.

Agrii uses controlled research and field evaluation to understand not simply whether a response occurs, but where that response is most likely to add value.

This includes looking at crop response, timing, environmental conditions and how the product fits within the wider agronomy programme.
