Variety Positioning

• SY Kingsbarn has been a very popular hybrid across the UK but has become outclassed in both yield (98% treated, 74% untreated) and disease resistance.

• It has been popular due to its low screening losses and a high specific weight (70.6 kg/hl).  

• It continues to be used on lower potential sites, lighter soils, anaerobic digestion, and for situations where grassweeds are a problem.

• Very stable performance across all regions and soil types. Best drilled from late September through to mid-October.

• Very competitive against grassweeds.

• Tall straw (115 cm untreated, 106 cm treated).

• Stem stiffness is on the lower side (6 treated, 6 untreated) with a higher risk of lodging compared with SY Quantock even with a robust PGR programme. Medium-early maturity (0). 

• Good disease resistance against mildew (RL 7; Agrii 6), Rhynchosporium (RL 6; Agrii 7) but weaker against brown rust (RL 5; Agrii 4) and net blotch (RL 5; Agrii 5) than newer hybrids.

• Resistant to barley mild mosaic and yellow mosaic virus (strain 1).
