Preparing Irrigation and Growing Media for the Planting Season

Preparing Irrigation and Growing Media for the Planting Season

Planting preparation begins long before plants arrive on farm. Checking irrigation systems, growing media, and nutrient inputs now can help ensure uniform establishment and reduce disease risk through the season.

As planting approaches, attention turns to preparing irrigation and fertigation systems so they are ready for the season ahead. After the warm conditions experienced in 2025, many systems worked harder than usual, with higher volumes of water and nutrients moving through lines.

Flushing irrigation lines over winter using hydrogen peroxide, or hydrogen peroxide combined with silver, helps remove biofilm and sterilise the system.

Where a full flush is not possible, applying a continuous low-dose hydrogen peroxide treatment through the season can help prevent biofilm build-up.

A clean system supports efficient operation and helps ensure water is distributed evenly across the crop.

Water management and system reliability

Recent seasons have reinforced the importance of water as a limited resource. Irrigation reliability and water storage capacity are becoming increasingly important considerations for soft fruit production.

Ensuring irrigation systems are clean and functioning correctly helps reduce risk when disease pressure increases.

Managing coir substrates

For growers using coir in bags or slabs, irrigation uniformity is important when flushing excess salts from growing media. Check that coir has been hydrated properly and that there are no dry areas within bags or slabs.

Monitoring pH and electrical conductivity levels within coir can help identify potential issues early.

Managing sodium in irrigation systems

Excess sodium in irrigation water or growing media can lead to salinity problems and reduced plant performance.

Low-sodium potassium nitrate fertilisers can help reduce flushing requirements and improve nutrient uptake.

Final planting checks

Confirm plant deliveries with suppliers and inspect plant material carefully on arrival. Monitor crops closely during establishment.
