Swallow

Breeder: Blackman Agriculture, UK Agent: Secobra Breeder PDF
Type: Soft Feed & Distilling Pedigree: Gator x Cougar

Variety Positioning

  • A high yielding soft wheat in Agrii’s Scottish trial in 2021 (102% treated, 99% untreated). Average physical grain quality (75.8 kg/hl AHDB) but rated ‘good’ for distilling.
  • It can be grown in all regions but its best performance is in the North (101% AHDB), including areas of high sterility risk. Best drilled in the main drilling window until further information is available. It can be grown on both heavy and lighter soils with good performance on the latter. Its grassweed competitiveness is still under evaluation in Agrii trials and it is a satisfactory second wheat choice.
  • Short (80 cm), stiff straw (8 treated, 8 untreated) but its maturity is later (+3) than the official rating suggests (+1).
It has a reasonable disease profile for mildew (5.7), yellow rust (5.8), brown rust (5.6) and Septoria tritici (5.5) from official trials but it appears very susceptible to fusarium ear blight. Resistant to orange wheat blossom midge.
