Rural Community Champions Project
July 3, 2015
Three finalists have now been chosen from the shortlist of 20 by our independent panel of judges. They are:
Lingen Community Broadband
A group of volunteers who have provided a communication lifeline to their local rural community – giving them access to fast broadband when others thought it wasn’t possible. The team has dedicated endless hours to connect over 100 rural businesses and homes in NorthHerefordshire to broadband. In the absence of a reliable mobile signal, this is a vital lifeline for the community.
Nominated by: Theresa Jones
Stuart and his team of volunteers at the Border Search and Rescue Team (BSARU) all freely give up their time to serve others in need. Police Scotland rely heavily on the unit as a resource to search for missing people in the challenging rural environment of the south east of Scotland. In January 2015 alone the team were called out on five occasions, in appalling weather conditions, to search for missing and stranded walkers. The team is on call 24 hours a day, every day of the year. Many of them work full time in agriculture, but still give up their time to help others in difficulty.
Nominated by: Brian MacFarlane
David is a farm manager at Morley Farms in Norfolk, who uses his passion, enthusiasm and endless energy to promote agriculture to the public. Operating special school visits across Norfolk, David accompanies children out on the farm, giving talks about where our food comes from. He has also been a correspondent on BBC Norfolk Radio, championing the farming industry and educating a wider audience on farming issues and food.
Nominated by: Jon Brooks
Voting on the three finalists above is currently taking place at a selection of Agrii’s summer events, and once the results are in, we’ll let you know who the overall winner is. We’ll also shortly be contacting the 17 local winners to let them know that they were selected and to send them their prizes. Once they’ve all been informed, we’ll include a full list of winners here. Thank you again to everyone who nominated, and good luck to our three finalists!
