Grass leys for paddocks or hay/ haylage production have different requirements from those used for cattle and sheep. PADDOCKS This is where horses spend most of their time. Paddocks tend to be small and need to provide grazing yet be hardy enough for play and exercise. Then when there is too much grass an area can be fenced off and later cut for hay. Our general purpose mixture for paddocks is Horse and Pony Master. The mixture contains mostly perennial ryegrasses which are fibrous and prostrate in growth to reduce soil exposure. Horses graze with their lips so the pasture is grazed down more like a sheep sward. The Timothy will grow earlier even in a wet cold spring and create stemmy plants by early May. The creeping red fescue spreads quickly by rhizomes and is able to help fill any gaps on areas of heavy usage. Regular overseeding annually will reduce the need to plough and take the paddock out of use for 6 months. We have two options: for those wanting just two years of very high yielding quality production use the Short Term Hay. This has early maturing fast growing grass and will respond well to nitrogen. For hay to dry down evenly we only use diploid varieties which are not fleshy like the tetraploids. For longer term hay and haylage production we can introduce Timothy and revert to the more fibrous of the perennial ryegrass. As haylage is cut wet we can mix both diploids and tetraploids to maintain higher yields over years. For longer term hay and haylage production we can now use both diploids and tetraploids to produce an excellent grass mix which will last over 5 years.
