WHY IS LIMING IMPORTANT? The main reason for lime application is to correct high levels of acidity in the soil. Acidic soils can reduce plant growth by inhibiting the intake of major plant nutrients – nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. Some plants, for example legumes, will not grow in highly acidic soils. GPS generates a computer image of the field results Managing the basics: The key elements Only when the soil status is known can we generate a fertiliser plan, taking into account organic inputs. Understanding the role of macro nutrients and the way they behave in the soil is key to optimising production. Nitrogen is the major nutrient required in the greatest quantity and the driver of yield. As a rule of thumb, grass will typically utilise 2.5kgN/Ha/Day to optimise yield and quality. Phosphorus is important in the development of roots and for plant tiller survival, and if short will result in plants being susceptible to drought, with stunted growth resulting in later maturing crops. A shortage of phosphate will impact the uptake of nitrogen and also due to its immobility, a deficiency cannot be rectified quickly. As a rule, spring applications of phosphate when crop demand is greatest will give the best results. Potassium is involved in a number of functions within the plant, including protein production and the transport of nutrients, and if deficient will result in the plant being more susceptible to stress. In grazing systems where most of the potash ingested is returned to the soil the demand is low, however in cutting systems with high levels of offtake the demand is higher dependent on the intensity of the system. Sulphur is now of major importance as a nutrient, due to a reduction in atmospheric deposition, however only 10% of grass receives a sulphur dressing. Sulphur is the building block of protein helping to improve growth and development. Trial work where sulphur is added shows increased DM yield, ME and Protein with reductions in nitrate leaching. It not only aids the uptake of nitrogen but also improves palatability.
